Born Ryhehill, 13/01/1892. Son of Herbert Cressey (1875-1938) and Mrs Elizabeth Ann (Betsy Ann) Cressey, of Salford, Near Manchester.
He emigrated on 28 Jun 1912 • Quebec, Canada, where he worked as a farmer. He enlisted at Calgary. Described as 5 foot, 5.5 inches tall, 36-38 inch chest, fresh complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair., Methodist Religion.
Served as LSgt. Harold Sidney Cressey, with the 31st Btn. Canadian Infantry, part of the reinforcement sent in after 100,000 British and French soldiers had been killed or wounded during the first three months of the battle to take Passchendaele Ridge in 1917.
He died on 6th November 1917 at Passchendaele, aged 25, and has no known grave. He is commemorated by the CWGC at Ypres (Menin Gate)Memorial.
He is named on the Thorngumbold ww1 village memorial, where 65 men served and 9 men died during ww1.
