BORN BEVERLEY 1885. ELDEST SON OF GEORGE CROSS (1849-1920) AND MARY ANN CROSS (1856-1900), OF 125 KELD GATE, BEVERLEY AND 2 TRINITY LANE, BEVERLEY (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). A LABOURER. HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 3596, ‘C’ COMPANY, 1/4TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, 15/09/1916, AGED 31.
HIS BROTHER PRIVATE, EDWARD CROSS, 2630, 5TH YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, DIED OF WOUNDS, ON THE SOMME, ON 27/10/1916, AGED 23. THEY ARE BOTH COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. THEIR FATHER, GEORGE HAD LOST TWO SONS ON THE SOMME, WITHIN A MONTH.
