BORN HULL 14/12/1871. BETTER KNOWN AS  “SYD” DAVIS, ON THE HULL FISH DOCK. SON OF SYDNEY DAVIS AND ELIZABETH HAMMOND. HIS FATHER DIED IN 1901. HIS MOTHER DIED IN 1915. HE MARRIED ESTHER SARAH HODGSON IN 1892, WHO LIVED AT 4, ARTHURS TERRACE, MASSEY STREET AND 5, POPLAR GROVE, WOODCOCK STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). A FISHERMAN.

HE WAS LOST AT SEA OFF LOWESTOFT, ON 26/06/1915, AGED 43. HIS BODY WAS NOT RECOVERED. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND SEVEN CHILDREN. ALSO TWO BROTHERS, ERNEST AND ALBERT. HISDEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 03/07/1916. * HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WOODCOK STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (HDM 23/09/1916) AND ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.

HMT Tugela, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Hull in 1900 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 233 tons. On June 26th, 1916, HMT Tugela was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-1 (Kurt Ramien), off Lowestoft. 8 persons were lost.
