Dawson, Douglas Maxwell

Private, Douglas Maxwell Dawson, Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment.

Born Cottingham, Hull, 1897. Son of Herbert and Annie Dawson, of 153, Mottram Road., Stalybridge, Cheshire. The family lived at York Road, Shipton, Yorkshire (1901 Census) and 44 Acres Lane, Stalybridge, Lancashire (1911 Census).

He enlisted at Cottingham, Hull, joining the army on 23/03/1914, before war began. Posted to France on 19/11/1914. Served as Private, 1720, 6th Cheshire Regiment. Took part in the Somme Offensive on 12/07/1916.  Transferred as Private, 242993, 51st Royal Lancaster Regiment. Died of wounds, on 15/08/1916, whilst digging new fire trenches near Guillemont. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
