Denniss, Hubert Alfred

BORN HULL 26/10/1884. LIVED HULL. SON OF ALFRED DENNISS (1848-1935) & CATHERINE ANN WORKMAN (1853-1921), OF THIS ADDRESS, 45 HIGH STREET, HULL AND “KINGSWOOD”, CARDIGAN ROAD, BRIDLINGTON. THE THIRD OF SIX CHILDREN. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. HE WORKED AS A TIMER MERCHANT’S CLERK IN HULL.

EMIGRATED TO CANADA, IN 1906. LIVING IN LISGAR, MANITOBA AND WORKING AS A “HIRED MAN”. EMPLOYED BY THE CANADIAN SOUTHERN LUMBER COMPANY. HE WAS AN ENTHUSIASTIC SPORTSMAN. CAPTAIN OF BOTH CRICKET AND FOOTBALL TEAMS IN SIDNEY WHERE HE LIVED FOR SIX YEARS. HE ALSO PLAYED IN A TENNIS TOURNAMENT IN VICTORIA.

HE ENLISTED IN THE PRINCESS PATRICIA LIGHT INFANTRY. SERVED WITH THE CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE (CEF). DIED OF WOUNDS, AT 85TH FIELD AMBULANCE, ON 12/05/1915, AGED 32. HE IS BURIED AT HAZEBROUCK COMMUNAL CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH”

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE CALGARY HERALD, CANADA.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL’S HYMER COLLEGE ROLL OF HONOUR.

NOTE HIS CANADIAN ARMY RECORDS STATE HIS DATE OF BIRTH AS 22/10/1879. ENGLANDCENSUS RECORD STATE 1884? HIS NAME IS SOMETIMES INTERCHANGED TO ALFRED HUBERT, AND SOMETIMES REFERRED TO HERBERT. HIS CWGC RECORDS GIVE HIS NAME, AS HUBERT ALFRED DENNISS, AGED 32.
