BORN HULL 1895. ONLY SON OF ALBERT EDWARD (1865-1936) & CHARLOTTE ANN DOBBS (1860-1940), OF 23, SOUTHCOATES AVENUE, HULL, (CWGC ADDRESS) & 39, WAVERLEY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE LEFT TWO SISTERS. EMPLOYED AS AN OFFICE BOY (1911 CENSUS).

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 04/09/1914. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 10 INCHES TALL, 139 LBS WEIGHT, 36 INCH CHEST. SERVED IN EGYPT FROM 15/12/1915, WITH THE 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (HULL COMMERCIAL PALS). POSTED TO FRANCE ON 08/031916 AS A MACHINE GUNNER. AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL (MM), FOR BRAVERY IN THE FIELD ON 01/08/1916. KILLED IN ACTION THE FOLLOWING DAY, AGED 21. HIS ARMY EFFECTS AND MILITARY MEDAL WERE SENT TO HIS FATHER, ALBERT, WHO DECLINED A PUBLIC PRESENTATION. HE IS BURIED AT LE TOURET MILITARY CEMETERY, RICHEBOURG-L’AVOUE, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “OH FOR THE TOUCH OF A VANISHED HAND THE SOUND OF A VOICE THAT IS STILL”
