BORN HULL, 1885. THIRD SON OF JOHN DUFFEY (1858-1937) & MARY ANN CONLON (1858- ), OF 13, GEORGE’S PLACE, COLLIER STREET, HULL (HULL DAILY MAIL ADDRESS 09/05/1917) AND 8, ST STEPHENS PLACE, ST STEPHENS SQUARE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER, MARGARET. SON OF A DOCK LABOURER. HE WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER. ONE OF THREE BROTHERS KILLED IN THE WAR.

JAMES DUFFY, SERVED IN THE 11TH EYR (HULL PALS) IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. KILLED AT OPPY WOOD ON 03/05/1917, AGED 29.

HIS BROTHER, JOHN DUFFY ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED IN THE 2ND YORKSHIRE HUSSARS ( (Alexandra, Princes of Wales’ Own). KILLED IN ACTION ON 22/03/1918, AGED 33. HE COMMEMORATED ON THE POZIERES MEMORIAL, FRANCE.

HIS OLDEST BROTHER, THOMAS DUFFY, SERVED AS A SERGEANT IN THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT.  KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 10/07/1916, AGED 36. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

James’ regimental number that suggests he was originally a part of the 3rd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. James was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 at Oppy Wood and his body was never recovered. If you are ever in France and care to visit Faubourg d’Amiens British Cemetery, you will find the Arras Memorial where the name of James Duffy is etched alongside those of 34,784 other men who lost their lives in the Arras sector and have no known grave. Note also James Duffy’s at 72 Walker Street,Hull.
His brother Sergeant, Thomas Duffy, 7th East Yorkshire Regiment, was killed at the Somme, on 10/7/1916. There is a family notice to their deaths in Hull Daily Mail on 25/02/1918.
