BORN HULL 1887. SON OF ELIZABETH ANN ELLIS (1859-1939) & JOHN THOMAS ELLIS (1844-1892). HIS FATHER WAS A FISHERMAN. HIS WIDOWED MOTHER REMARRIED IN 1893, BECAME MRS THARRATT AND LIVED AT 10 DORSET STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS.

HE MARRIED SARAH JANE. THEY HAD THREE DAUGHTERS AND TWO SONS. A JOINER. THEY LIVED AT 16, VICTORIA STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 344, BOULEVARD, HULL. HE WAS SKIPPER, OF THE HULL TRAWLER, “SOUTHWARD HO”. LOST WITH ALL HANDS, ON 27/05/1915, AGED 29.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH ROLL OF HONOUR, WITH HIS BROTHERS, – BENJAMIN ELLIS, SKIPPER OF THE TRAWLER “EXPEDIENT”, SUNK 27/05/1917, AGED 32 & JOSEPH JACK ELLIS, LOST ON THE TRAWLER, “QUAIR, ON 03/11/1916, AGED 30. ANOTHER BROTHER, ERNIE,  WAS LOST ON HMT ‘SEA HORSE’ ON 05/13/1913.
On 27/05/1915 the Hull steam trawler SOUTHWARD HO (H456) was lost with all hands due to enemy action 88 miles E.x N. of Spurn Head. Also reported as Missing, lost all hands. Vessel built in 1899 by Doig & Broadley.
