Elvidge, Charles William

BORN BEVERLEY 1884. SON OF JOHN W & HARRIET ELVIDGE, OF 5, HAMLYN AVENUE, HULL AND 24, CARLTON VILLAS, GROVE HILL ROAD, BEVERLEY. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. A FORMER RAILWAY LABOURER.

HE JOINED THE ARMY IN 13/02/1905. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5 INCHES TALL, 126 LBS WEIGHT, 35 INCH CHEST, BROWN EYES, BROWN HAIR. WAS A BUGLER IN INDIA, FOR 8 YEARS AND OF “EXEMPLARY” CHARACTER. -“VERY STEADY, HARD WORKING AND INTELLIGENT”.

HIS WIFE ROSE GRAHAM, LIVED AT 3, IVY ARCH ENTRY, ANLABY ROAD, HULL, AND 18 WENLOCK ROAD, SIMONSIDE, SOUTH SHIELDS (CWGC ADDRESS).

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS RIFLEMAN, 6391, “B” COMPANY, 7 PLATOON, 9TH KINGS ROYAL RIFLE CORPS. ARRIVED IN FRANCE WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. WOUNDED IN THE BACK, ON 28/10/1914. RETURNED TO ENGLAND AND THEN BACK TO FRANCE ON 11/08/1915. HE WAS REPORTED MISSING AND HIS MOTHER APPEALED FOR INFORMATION IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 2ND NOVEMBER 1915. HIS DEATH WAS CONFIRMED ON 25/09/1915, AGED 32. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 10 YEARS AND 225 DAYS. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ROSE. HIS NAME IS INSCRIBED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL, YPRES.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
