Farquharson, John Charles Launcelot

Lt, John Charles Farquharson, 1st London Scottish

Born Hull 16 May 1881. Seventh Son of Colonel, Matthew Henry Farquharson (1839-1917) and Emma Loat (1844-1929), of of “Glengarry,” The Grove, Woking, Surrey (CWGC address). Son of a retired Royal Marine Colonel. He had eight brothers and three sisters and came from a distinguished military family. Educated at Dulwich College, where he played Rugby and football. Then educated at University College Oxford. Obtained his Rugby Blue in 1903. Played football for the Old Alleynian FC, Surrey, between 1904-1907. He was keen on athletics and enlisted in the Scottish Territorials, where he led the team to four marathons.

He resided at 3 Palmer Street, Westminster where he was Manager of a Copper Manufacturer’s

Commissioned a Lieutenant, in the 1st London Scottish (14th London regiment). He went to France, on 01/09/1914. Reported missing and killed on 31/10/1914- 01/11/1914. He is commemorated on the Ypres memorial.

He left,£1,143 in his will to his father.

His brother, Lieutenant Colonel, Cecil Graham Farquharson (1884-1918), MC, RMLI, was killed in action, on 24/03/1918, aged 33.
