BORN HULL 07/05/ 1892. BAPTISED AT ST CHARLES BORROMEO, ON 21ST MAY 1892.

FOURTH SON OF THOMAS FREDERICK FARRELL (1849-1930) & MARY MONICA COLLINGWOOD (1861-1954), AT 1 BROOKSIDE, NEWLAND PARK, HULL. ONE OF FOUR SONS. HIS FATHER WAS REGISTRARSOLICITOR, AT THE HULL COUNTY COURT. ADRIAN WAS A BLUNDELL’S EMPLOYEE, WORKING IN THE LABORATORY AS AN ANALYTICAL CHEMIST.

COMMISSIONED AS A SECOND LIUTENANT, IN THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRES. HE WAS POSTED TO FRANCE IN 1915 AND SERVED WITH COLONEL SHAW, AT ST JULIEN BATTLE ON 24/04/1915. HE WAS WOUNDED THAT DAY AND HIS BROTHER, CAPTAIN BEDE FARRELL. 1/4TH EYR WAS KILLED IN THE SAME ACTION. ADRIAN WAS WOUNDED IN THE NECK, HAND, LEGS AND ARMS. HE NEVER RECOVERED FROM HIS WOUNDS AND HE DIED, AFTER A LEG OPERATION, TO REMOVE SHARPNEL, ON 23/08/1916, AGED 24, AT QUEEN ALEXANDRIA’S MILITARY HOSPITAL, GROSVENOR ROAD, MIDDLESEX. HE RECEIVED AN IMPRESSIVE MILITARY FUNERAL AND IS BURIED AT HULL NORTHERN CEMETERY. A MASS WAS HELD FOR HIM AT ST CHARLES BORROMEO, ATTENDED BY CANNON HALL OF LEEDS.

HE LEFT £762 IN HIS WILL TO HIS OLDER BROTHER, HUGH FARRELL. THERE IS A MEMORIAL TO HIM AT ST VINCENT’S CHURCH, QUEENS ROAD, HULL.
HIS OLDER BROTHER, CAPTAIN, BEDE FARRELL, 1/4TH EYR, WAS KILLED ON 24/04/1915, AGED 33.

BOTH BROTHERS ARE LISTED ON ST CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL & ON THE HYMERS SCHOOL ROLL OF HONOUR.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE YORKSHIRE POST ON 23TH AUGUST 1916.
Lt. Adrian Farrell died of wounds on the 23rd August 1916 at Queens Alexandra’s Military Hospital Middlesex. This followed an operation to amputate an injured limb. He is buried at Hull General Cemetery. His other brother, Captain, Wiflred Jerome Farrell, MC, served in the RFA and survived the war. He was awarded the OBE and enlisted in WW2.
