Fenton, Francis (Frank)

Hull Pals Memorial Post. CPL FRANCIS FENTON 12/585. Born Hull in 1892, Francis was the youngest of eight children to William Francis Fenton (1852-1927) and Elizabeth Cheesbrough (1851-1923), of 105 Severn Street, Hull. He had three brothers and three sisters. A Ship’s Plater by trade, described as 5 foot, 7 inches tall, 137 lbs weight, 35-37 inch chest, blue eyes, brown hair, Church of England religion.

He married Florence Mary Barker, on 14th March 1914 and the couple moved into 157 Craven Street, Hull, (War Pension address). Their son, Francis Richmond Fenton, was born on 7th June 1914.

Francis enlisted in Hull,  on 24th September 1914, joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. He served in Egypt and France. Was killed in action on 26th May 1916 by a shell burst while talking to 2nd Lt Taylor who also lost his life. Francis Fenton is buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery; he was 24 years old.
