Ferguson, William

Born Hull, 22/11/1894. son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ferguson, of 1, Crowl Avenue, Wyke Street, Hull. Lived at 7, Warwick Terrace Warwick St Hedon Road, Hull. A labourer (1911 census). He married Hannah Mary Hagues, in January 1914. They had two children and lived at Church Lane, Marfleet, East Hull.

Served as Able Seaman in the Royal Naval Division. These were surplus sailors formed into army battalions that fought on land.

Enlisted on 09/08/1915; Draft for Middle East Expeditionary Force on 16/02/1916, joined the Nelson Battalion between. 1/3/1916 -23/01/1917 (Trench Feet), rejoined Nelson Bn., on 07/04/1917, detached to Divisional Train., on 14/09/1917, re-joined Nelson Bn., on 18/01/1918, joined 7th Entrenching Bn., on 22/02/1918, posted to Hawke Bn., on 20/03/18 -10/05/1918

Died of wounds in 149th (RN) Field Ambulance (GSW right thigh fractured & Abdomen), on 10/05/1918, Aged 24. Buried at Varennes Military Cemetery (FR 41).

His CWGC headstone reads “Husband of Hannah Mary Ferguson, of Marfleet, Hull” ; A Stoker Merchant Service; b.22/11/1894; Next-of-Kin & home address: Wife, Mary H. Ferguson, 18 Egypt Street, Marfleet, Hull. She remarried as: Mrs. J. Gooding, and moved to School House, Church Lane, Marfleet, Hull. She also lost her brother, William Henry Hagues (1891-1917) in the war. Her husband and brother are both commemorated on Marfleet Roll of Honour, Hull
