BORN HULL 1894. ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. SON OF JOE FLETCHER, OF 14 JOEL’S AVENUE, HOTHAM STREET, HEDON ROAD. BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS EMPLOYED AT ALEXANDRA DOCK. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 13TH SEPTEMBER 1916. *
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOHN WILLIAM FLETCHER 12/939. Born in September 1892, John was the son of Joseph and Miriam Fletcher of 14 Joel’s Avenue, Hedon Road, Hull. A Labourer by trade he enlisted at City Hall on 5th October 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. John was appointed Lance Corporal in February 1915, but appears not to have been quite the upstanding example the top brass were after and was demoted on 9th April. John William Fletcher was killed in action on 1st September 1916 and is buried in St. Vaast Military Cemetery; he was 23 years old.
