Freeman, Joseph

Born Hull, 1893. Son of James Freeman and Bridget Nelson (1858-1936), of 1, Sidney Terrace, Sidney Street,  Hull (1911 census). He had two brothers and four sisters.

Married at St Mary’s, Hull on 4 Oct 1913. Husband of Mrs Ethel May Hart (16/5/1893-1971), at 51, Jenning Street, Hull (War Pension address). They had one son Joseph Freeman, born on 23/7/1916.

A Soldier. Enlisted in the army on 28/11/1904, aged 19. Described as 5 foot, 6 inches tall, 137 lbs weight, 35 inch chest, blue eyes, brown hair, tattoos on both arms. Druk, absent without leave and forfeited pay – his Army character was described as “Fair”.

Served in the 1st & 2nd East Yorkshire regiment. Posted to France, on 08/09/1914. Returned to England on 02/10/1915. Discharged with Gastric Ulcer, contracted in India in 1908. Discharged on 26/01/1916, after 11 years and 60 days army service. Died of a Gastric Ulcer, on 16/11/1917, aged 32.

His army effects were left to his widow, Ethel.
