BORN HULL 1897. SON OF JOHN ANDREW & EMMA FRUS ABOVE. HIS FATHER WAS THE CHIEF ENGINEERS FOR THE WILSON LINERS AND HAD HIMSELF BEEN TORPEDOED ON TWO OCCASIONS. BASIL FRUS WAS THE SECOND OFFICER, ON THE WILSON VESSEL ‘MONTOBELLO’, SUNK ON 21ST JUNE, 1918. HE HAD SURVIVED BEING TORPEDOED TWICE BEFORE. EDUCATED AT TRINITY NAVAL SCHOOL, HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE TRINITY HOUSE MEMORIAL. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 30TH JULY 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * TWO BROTHERS, SERVED IN FRANCE.
SS Montebello, built by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Hull in 1911 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 4324 tons. On June 21st, 1918, Montebello, on a voyage from London to Hampton Roads, was sunk by the German submarine U-100 (Degenhart von Loë), 320 miles W1/2N from Ushant (Ouessant). 41 persons were lost, included the ship’s Master.
