Galloway, George David

BORN HULL 1886. SON OF JOHN GALLOWAY (1848-1912) & SARAH ANN FOWLER (1859-1947), OF 46, CLEVELAND STREET, HULL. SON OF A PAINT GRINDER FROM DUBLIN. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN AND THREE BROTHERS LOST IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR.

HE WORKED AS A GENERAL LABOURER. A MARRIED MAN. HIS WIFE GERTRUDE, LIVED AT 58 CLEVELAND STREET (1911 CENSUS), AT 7 MARION’S TERRACE, COURTNEY STREET AND 46 CLEVELAND STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD FOUR SONS, GEORGE, WILLIAM, ALBERT AND HAROLD.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 13/07/1915. SERVED IN ‘A’ COMPANY, 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS WOUNDED AT THE SOMME, AND REPATRIATED TO ENGLAND. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, IN SHEFFIELD, ON 17/07/1916, AGED 30.

HE IS BURIED AT HULL’S HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, GERTRUDE NILSON.

HIS BROTHER, THOMAS GALLOWAY, 1ST EYR, WAS KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 15/09/1916. HIS OTHER BROTHER, EVANS GALLOWAY, RFA, DIED OF WOUNDS, IN BELGIUM ON 15/11/1917.
