BORN ELLERBY, 1892. ENLISTED HULL. SON OF DANIEL GARDINER (1850-1934) & THERESA HANNAH DEARING (1856-1946), OF RAILWAY COTTAGES, SKIRLAUGH, HULL, EAST YORKSHIRE, UK. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 5 INCHES TALL, 123 LBS WEIGHT, 33-35 INCH CHEST,

HE ENLISTED ON 29/12/1915. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 04/07/1916. SERVED WITH THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. PRESUMED KILLED ON 05/11/1916, AGED 24. HIS BODY WAS NEVER FOUND AND HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING, SOMME, FRANCE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 343 DAYS. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ANNA.
