BORN FILEY 1888. SON OF EDWARD GEORGE GASH (1859-1927) AND MARY HANNAH SAYERS (1859-1923), OF 3 ALBION PLACE, FILEY. HE WORKED AS A WAGGONER HORSEMAN ON A FARM, IN BRIDLINGTON AND AS A MALTSTER IN HULL. HE MARRIED HENRIETTA CROMPTON (1887-1953), IN HULL, IN 1914. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 10/12/1915. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 10 INCHES TALL. 39 INCH CHEST, 168 LBS WEIGHT.

SERVED WITH THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY. HE DIED AFTER THE WAR ENDED ON 24/11/1918, AGED 31. HE IS BURIED IN HULL WESTERN CEMETERY.

HIS WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN LIVED AT 4 GRIMSTON TERRACE, CLIFTON STREET, HULL  (CWGC ADDRESS) HIS DAUGHTER PHYLIS DIED IN 1917, AGED 2 YEARS.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, EDWARD GASH,  29769, 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT WAS KILLED ON 02/08/1918, AGED 19. HIS HALF BROTHER, GUNNER, ALBERT STONEHOUSE, DIED IN EGYPT, ON 19/06/1916. ALL THREE ARE COMMEMORATED ON THE FILEY WW1 MEMORIAL.
