BORN HULL 1882. HIS DEATH IS LISTED IN SOLDIERS DIED RECORDS. SON OF JOHN AND FANNY GASH.
ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGEIMENT. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, RECEIVED ON THE SOMME, AT ETAPLES, ON 5TH JULY 1916, AGED 34. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER. HIS NAME IS RECORDED IN TRINITY CHURCH REGISTER & ON THE CITY ENGINEERS MEMORIAL.
HE IS BURIED AT ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY. THE ATTACK ON THE SOMME WAS HOPED TO HAVE ENDED THE WAR, AND THE PUBLIC WERE NEVER TOLD THE TRUE HORRORS. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “THANKS BE TO THE LORD WHO HAS GIVEN US THIS VICTORY”
