BORN HULL 1891 ELDEST SON OF THOMAS YOUNG GILDER (1861-1897) & EMMA JANE ATKINSON, OF 164 WATERLOO STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND THIS CWGC ADDRESS. SECOND OF SIX CHILDREN. A GENERAL LABOURER. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 13/07/1915. SERVED AS CORPORAL, 11026, 10TH WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED AT FRICOURT, ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME, ON 1ST JULY 1916, AGED 26. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, EMMA JANE ATKINSON. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BRIDLINGTON STREET ROLL OF HONOUR. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 14/08/1916. A LETTER FROM PRIVATE J REID REPORTS THAT HE DIED A HERO.
HE IS BURIED AT FRICOURT NEW MILITARY CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THY WAY O LORD – NOT MINE, MOTHER AND FAMILY”
