Born Wilberfoss, Yorkshire, 1887. Son of John Gospel (1847-1925) and Ann Gospel (1849-1932). He had three brothers and four sisters.

Employed as a railway porter, at Nidd Bridge Ripley Yorkshire and grocer’s assistant, boarding at 6 Park Avenue, Manchester, (1911 Census). Resided at Low Catton, East Yorkshire

He enlisted at Manchester. Served with the 20th Manchester Regiment. Arrived in France, on 09/11/1915. Died of wounds, on 19/05/1916, aged 28. His army effects were left to his father, John.
