Grainger, Edwin Alfred

Born Harrogate, 1876. Husband of Mary Elizabeth Welsh, at 7, Eva’s Terrace Adelaide Street Hull (1911 census), and 4, Derwent Avenue, Lansdowne Street, Anlaby Road, Hull (War Pension address).

Worked as a Porter for the North Eastern Railways. He joined the army, aged 23. Enlisted on 12 Jun 1899 • Leeds, Yorkshire, England. He was 5 foot, 7 inches tall, 35-37 inch chest, 35 inch waist, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, tattoo on left forearm. Church of England religion, Very Good Character. 

A Professional Soldier. He served with the West Yorkshire Regiment, in the South African war. He held the King’s & Queen South African Medals with clasps.

He married at Scarborough Registry office on 6th April 1907. Worked as a Dock Labourer in Hull. Also a Reservist. Posted to France, on 24/9/1914 with the British Expeditionary Force. Awarded the Mons Star. Re-enlisted on 9th June 1916 when service expired. Served with the 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment, then Durham Light Infantry, then Labour Corps.

Discharged on 31 Mar 1920. Served for 20 years and 293 days. Awarded Disability Pension. Died in Hull September 1924, aged 48.

His brother, William Gilbert Granger was also killed on 28/10/1917 (Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment) 58th Bn. Sergeant W G Grainger S/N 451845)
