John Henry ‘Jack’ Grainger

BORN HULL 1897. YOUNGEST SON OF JOHN HENRYGRAINGER  (1846-1900) & ADA AUGUSTA HILLIER (1866-1933)) OF 25 HUTT STREET, SPRING BANK, HULL (1911 CENSUS) & 602 WESTHOLME HOUSE, BEVERLEY HIGH ROAD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A LIGHTER OWNER,  YOUNGEST OF SIX CHILDREN. EDUCATED AT HYMERS COLLEGE. EMPLOYED BY RISHWORH, INGLEBY & LOFTHOUSE, OF HULL.

HE ENLISTED AT HULL. IN THE “HULL COMMERCIALS”. LATER COMMISSIONED AS 2ND LIEUTENANT, IN THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. DIED 15/09/1918, AGED 19.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE HYMERS COLLEGE ROH. HE IS BURIED AT ADANAC MILITARY CEMETERY, MIRAUMONT, SOMME. FRANCE. HIS GRAVE READS, “HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR OTHERS”.

HIS BROTHER WAS ALSO WOUNDED A FEW WEEKS BEFORE.
