Hull Pals Memorial Post. LANCE CORPORAL CAREY GREEN 11/651. Born in 1891, Carey was the eldest of two sons to George and Sarah Green of 24 Earlsgate, Winterton, Lincolnshire. A Draper before the war, he travelled to Hull to enlist in the heady days of September 1914 joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. After serving in Egypt in late 1915, Carey arrived in Marseilles early in March 1916 and set off north for the trenches of the Western Front. He was one of three men killed on 27th August 1916 at Divisional Bombing School when a Rifle Grenade prematurely exploded as they fired it. He was badly wounded by shrapnel in the head, leg and abdomen but survived long enough to be stretchered to 94th Field Ambulance where he died soon after arrival. The official inquiry ruled that he and his comrades were in no way to blame for the accident and that the whole box of shells were on inspection found to be faulty and potentially fatal to anyone who fired them. The No.3 Hales Rifle Grenade had been manufactured by Beaton & Sons Ltd, St. James Square, Holland Park, London on 8th April 1916. A company no doubt doing rather well out of the carnage in France and Belgium, yet clearly not too worried which side won. Carey is buried at Vielle-Chapelle Mew Military Cemetery; he was 25 years old. His father George had only recently buried his wife, now he had to contend with losing his eldest son. To complete his misery, his youngest son Harold was killed in action on 23rd October 1916, just two months later. The war left him completely alone.
