BORN HULL, 1881. AKA ‘DODGER’. SON OF WILLIAM HENRY GREEN (1847-1919) AND MARY ANN ENTWISTLE (1849-1915), OF 7, MYRTLE AVENUE WILLIAMSON STREET, HULL AND 3, CLAREMONT AVENEUE, FIELD STREET, HULL.

MARRIED AT ST PETERS, HULL, IN OCTOBER, 1908. HUSBAND OF SARAH GREEN, AT 12 ESCOURT STREET, NEWBRIDGE ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD TWO SONS, PERCIVAL, BORN 11/03/1910 AND GEORGE, BORN 02/05/1913. HE WORKED AS A LIGHTERMAN (1911 CENSUS)

HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 26/10/1899, AGED 19 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 6 INCHES TALL, 114 LBS WEIGHT, 33 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, LIGHT BROWN HAIR, TATTOOS ON HIS ARMS AND BACK. SERVED WITH THE PRINCE OF WALES VOLUNTEERS (2ND LANCASTER REGIMENT) FOR ELEVEN YEARS AND FIVE YEARS IN THE RESERVES. POSTED TO INDIA, AND SOUTH AFRICA 1900-1902. IN ALL HE WAS TO SERVE 16 YEARS AND 312 DAYS IN THE ARMY. AS A YOUNG SOLDIER HE HAD BEEN PUNISHED FOR BREAKING OUT OF CAMP AND CAUSING A DISTURBANCE, BUT HE ENJOYED ARMY LIFE, EXTENDED HIS SERVICE AND WAS ON LEAVING WAS DESCRIBED A “GOOD” CHARACTER AND “A STEADY, SMART AND INTELLIGENT MAN.” IN CIVILIAN LIFE, HE WORKED AS A LIGHTERMAN. CALLED UP AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR. HE WAS POSTED TO BELGIUM. SLIGHTLY WOUNDED IN THE RIGHT FOREARM ON 15/10/1914, BUT REJOINED HIS UNIT AFTER 4 DAYS. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON THE SOMME, ON 03/09/1916, AGED 35.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 13/08/1917.

HIS NAME WAS LISTED IN TRINITY CHURCH BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW SARAH AND CHILDREN.
