BORN HULL 1894. SON OF JOHN BROWN GRIFFIN (1856-1907) & ANNIE ELIZABETH TROWHELL (860-1904), OF 4, OCKLEY TERRACE, WEST PARADE, HULL (1901 CENSUS) & 64 WEST DOCK AVENUE, HULL. HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER. HE JOINED THE MERCHANT NAVY, ON 19/06/1908.

SERVED AS BOSUN, ON THE STEAM SHIP “MAURITIUS”. LOST AT SEA, ON 17/05/1915, AGED 20. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES ON 19/06/1915.

HIS BROTHER, ALBERT GRIFFIN, WAS A REGULAR SOLDIER. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 8627, 2ND BORDER REGIMENT, AND KILLED ON 18/12/1914, AGED 28.

ANOTHER BROTHER, JOHN REUBEN (JACK) GRIFFIN, DCM, (1883-1957), SERVED AS SERGEANT, 376387, 2ND/6TH DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY & WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL, ON 22/08/1918.

On 17/05/1915 the Hull steam trawler MAURITIUS (H547) was posted missing:- Lost with all hands whilst fishing in the North Sea.
