BORN HULL 1892. SCULCOATES. SON OF WILLIAM HENRY & ELIZABETH GRIFFIN, ABOVE 1911 ADDRESS. GROCERS ASSISTANT FOR THE HULL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY. ENLISTED IN SEPTEMBER 1914, AS A GUNNER IN THE 2ND NORTHUMBRIAN TERRITORIALS, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. POSTED TO FRANCE IN APRIL 1915. SERVED WITH THE 158TH RGA 97TH HEAVY ARTLLERY GROUP). AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL (MM) FOR GALLANTRY, UNDER SHELL FIRE, IN 1916 (HDM 21/11/1916).

HE DIED ON 30/07/1918, AGED 26. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER ELIZABETH. HIS NAME WAS RECORDED ON THE KINGS HALL CHURCH ROLL OF HONOUR, SYMONS STREET, HULL.

HE IS BURIED AT HOUCHIN BRITISH CEMETERY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE READS, “HE SLEEPS WITH ENGLAND’S HEROES IN THE WATCHFUL CARE OF GOD”
