Grinlaw, Thomas

BORN HULL 1875. SON OF ROBERT AND JANE GRINLAW, OF HULL. WORKED FOR MANY YEARS FOR HELLYER’S FISHING SMACKS. HAD BEEN SERVING ON MINESWEEPER FOR TWO YEARS, WHEN HE WAS LOST AT SEA, ON 28/09/1916, AGED 43. THOMAS GRINLAW LEFT A WIFE MAUD GRINLAW AND SIX CHILDREN AT 12 PRINCES AVENUE, WEST DOCK AVENUE, HULL. HE LEFT £94 TO HIS WIDOW. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 3RD JANUARY 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * REPORTED AGAIN IN THE HDM 05/11/1918.

HMT Orsino, built by Mackie & Thomson Ltd., Govan in 1906 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 172 tons. On September 28th, 1916, HMT Orsino was sunk by gunfire by the German submarine U-55 (Wilhelm Werner), Sunk by gunfire north of Strathie Point at 10:25. 6 persons were lost.
