2nd, Lieut, Thomas William Gruby, 8th Border Regiment.

BORN HULL 1894. STEP SON OF ELIZA JACKSON & YOUNGER SON OF THE LATE, THOMAS WILLIAM GRUBY (1839-1896), FROM HULL. HIS FATHER WAS A HULL COUNCILLOR. HE HAD FOUR SISTERS AND ONE BROTHER.

HE WAS EDUCATED WITH A VIEW TO ENTERING THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND MINISTRY. HE ATTENDED ST JOHNS COLLEGE, HURSTPIERPOINT AND KEEBLE COLLEGE, OXFORD, WHERE HE OBTAINED A THIRD CLASS DEGREE IN MODERN HISTORY.

PRIOR TO JOINING THE 8TH BORDER REGIMENT, HE RESIDED WITH HIS MOTHER, AT “CLOVELLY”, SOUTHWICK, SUSSEX.

HE DIED OF SHRAPNEL WOUNDS, ON  19/07/1916, AGED 22. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 24/07/1916. *
