Born Hull 1899. Ernest Hairsine lived at 13 Bessemer Terrace, Lorne Street, Hull, with his uncle and householder, Paul Brookes. This was his 1911 Census, CWGC and war pension address)
His parents were Fred Hairsine (1876-1909) and Sarah Elizabeth Brooks (1873-1961). His mother was Paul Brookes sister. He had a younger brother, Clarence (1897-1902) who died in infancy and four step sisters, Florence, Louisa, Alice and Ellen, from his mother’s second marriage.
After the death of Fred Hairsine in 1908, Sarah remarried a Thomas Henry Hunter (1862-1935), in 1910. She is documented as living with Thomas, at 14 Rutland Terrace Norfolk Street, Hull (1911 Census). Thomas already had four daughters living at home, which is presumably how Ernest ended up living with his Uncle.
Ernest Hairsine enlisted underage, at Hull, on 17/11/1914. He served as Private, 3067, in the 4th East Yorkshire (Territorial) Regiment and died in service on 13/03/1915, aged 15. Ernest is buried at Hull Western Cemetery. His Grave Registration Report shows Ernest was just 15 year old when he died.
His army effects were left to his uncle, Paul Brookes (1883-1936). Paul was his contact person/next of kin, despite the fact his mother was still alive.
Thank you to Lee Brookes, for the family information, sent on 20/02/2022.
