Haldenby, Albert

BORN BEVERLEY 1888. SON OF ROBERT HENRY HALDENBY (1846-1903) & ELIZABETH HALDENBY (1854-1935), OF 138, CLUMBER STREET, HULL. HIS FATHER WAS A POLICE INSPECTOR IN BEVERLEY. HE HAD FIVE SISTERS AND FIVE BROTHERS.

ALBERT WAS A MARRIED MAN, LIVING AT 1 BROOKLYN AVENUE, PERTH STREET. HE HAD FINISHED HIS SEVEN YEARS SOLDIERING AS A REGULAR WITH THE 2ND COLDSTREAM GUARDS. WORKED AS A CONDUCTOR ON THE HULL CORPORATION TRAMWAYS.

WAS ABOUT TO START FIVE YEARS AS A RESERVE WHEN WAR STARTED. HE HAD JUST GOT HIS NEW HOME FURNISHED WHEN WAR BEGAN AND HE WAS RECALLED, IN AUGUST, 1914.

ENLISTED AT HULL. HE SERVED AS PRIVATE, 7317, 2ND COLDSREAM GUARDS. KILLED AT CHAVONNE, ON 28/09/1914, AGED 26

HE VENTURED OUT IN THE MIST WITH TWO OTHERS TO ASSIST COMRADES. WHEN THE MIST CLEARED THEY CAME UNDER HEAVY FIRE AND HALDENBY WAS KILLED. IT WAS RUMOURED HE HAD BEEN RECOMMENDED FOR THE VICTORIA CROSS FOR THIS ACTION.

HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH ARE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 23RD OCTOBER 1914. *

HIS BROTHER FRED HALDENBY (1881-1926) SERVED AT SEA DURING THE WAR. HIS BROTHER, ARTHUR ROBERT HALDENBY (1887-1925),  8408, COLDSTREAM GUARDS, WAS AWARDED THE SILVER WAR BADGE FOR GUNSHOT WOUNDS. HIS BROTHER WILFRED HALDENBY (1896-1983), SERVED IN THE 1/4TH EYR.
