BORN BRIDLINGTON 1871. SON OF HENRY HARDY (1846-1931) & MARY ANN PROUDLEY (1848-1933), OF 3 WOODHOUSE STREET, HEDON ROAD, HULL. MARRIED HARRIET BARLOW (1875-1947), AT HULL IN 1896. THEY LIVED AT 16 SUSANNAH’S TERRACE, LEE SMITH STREET, HULL, WITH THEIR THREE CHILDREN. HIS BROTHER, JOSEPH HARDY (29) WAS LOST ON THE SAME SHIP, ON 12/04/1917. ANOTHER BROTHER, JOHN THOMAS HARDY DIED IN 1918, AGED 40. ANOTHER BROTHER, SAMUEL HARDY, SERVED IN 6TH COMPANY, RAMC AND WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE ARMY WITH DEFECTIVE VISION.
SS Toro, built by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Hull in 1904 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 3066 tons.
On April 12th, 1917, Toro, on a voyage from Alexandria to Hull with general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine U-55 (Wilhelm Werner), 200 miles WNW of Ushant (Ouessant). 14 persons were lost.
