Harper, Joseph

Born Hull, 1884. Son of William L Harper (1851-1890) and Harriet Harper.

Husband of Jane Ellen Harper (1885-1955). They had one son, William and four daughters, Beatrice, Elizabeth, Dora and Florence. They lived at 15, Arthur’s Terrace, Courtney Street, Hull (War Pension address). He was a General Labourer, 5 feet 71/2 ins tall.

Enlisted on 7/3/1917, aged 32. Formerly of the Lincolnshire regiment and Labour Corps. Wounded by Gas. Discharged on 5/3/1918. Awarded the Silver War Badge (No: 336788).

He was gassed in the trenches which left him suffering from attacks of asthma and bronchitis. Returning to work (too soon?) after a fortnight’s illness, he collapsed at work (in the sawmill), aged 37, and died five days later, leaving 5 children. Died on 22/01/1924, aged 37.
