Walter Harris

BORN HULL 1883. HULL PAL. SON OF WALTER HARRIS (1855-1922) & SARAH HARRIS (1859-1939), OF 4 WINDSOR TERRACE, COLONIAL STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS), 23, WEST PARADE, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS) & DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND.  HE HAD TWO SISTERS.

HE MARRIED AT ST STEPHENS, HULL, ON 24/12/1902. HIS WIFE FLORENCE CROWTHER, LIVED 11 MAPPLETON GROVE, EAST HULL AND 4 THOMAS PLACE PORTLAND STREET, HULL (1911 ADDRESS). THEY HAD TWO SONS, GEORGE AND WALTER. PRIOR TO WAR HE WORKED AS A DOCK GATEMAN. DESCIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6.5 INCHES TALL, 36-38 INCH CHEST, 138 LBS WEIGHT, ANCHOR TATTOO ON HIS LEFT ARM.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 30/12/1914. SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 33. COMMEMORATED AT THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, FRANCE.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE WALTER HARRIS 12/1323. Born in 1883, Walter was the son of Walter and Sarah Harris and husband of Florence Harris (nee Crowther). The whole family lived at 4 Windsor Terrace, Colonial Street, Hull with the younger Walter’s two children- Walter (again) and Hetty May. A Dock Gateman by trade, our Walter enlisted at City Hall joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals, on 30/12/1914. He was fined for absences three times during his training in 1915. He served in Egypt and France. He was killed in action on 13th November 1916 as the Pals attacked German positions at Serre in the last desperate act of the fateful Somme campaign. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Walter Jnr was killed in action in the next war. He was shot down over Germany while serving with the RAF on 21st November 1944, aged 39.
