BORN HULL SEPTEMBER 1891. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM & ADA BOND HARWOOD, COMMERCIAL HOTEL, COGAN STREET, HULL. HIS GRANDPARENTS, THOMAS AND HANNAH FALKINGHAM, LIVED AT 84 BEAN STREET, HULL. HE EMIGRATED TO AUSTRALIA AND MARRIED ELLEN ELIZABETH HARWOOD THERE. THEY HAD A SON, JASON CLIFFORD HARWOOD. HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A COOK. JAMES ENLISTED IN BRISBANE , AUSTRALIA, ON 23/02/1916, AGED 24 YEARS AND 5 MONTHS. HIS ARMY RECORDS, DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 5.5 INCHES TALL, 135 LBS, 36.5 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, AUBURN HAIR, A BURN SCAR ON HIS RIGHT UPPER ARM, TATTOO MARKS ON HIS BACK AND LOWER ARMS, AND A SCAR ON HIS FOREHEAD. AFTER INITIAL TRAINING, HE PROCEEDED TO FRANCE, ON THE STEAM SHIP, ‘VICTORIA’, ON 13/12/1916. HE JOINED THE 25TH AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCE, AT THE FRONT ON 18/12/1916. HE WAS KILLED AT PASSCHENDAELE, 10 MONTHS LATER, ON 09/10/1917, AGED 26.
HIS BODY WAS NEVER RECOVERED, AND HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE MEMIN GATE MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING, AT YPRES.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW ‘NELLIE’ HARWOOD, AT ‘WYBEN’, VICTORIA STREET, WEST END, BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA. A MISTAKE WAS MADE WHEN THEY SENT HER THE EFFECTS OF A PRIVATE P. J. MOKEN, 44TH AIF, FROM THE AIF OFFICE, 110 GREYHOUND ROAD, HAMMERSMITH, LONDON. SHE PARTICULARLY REQUESTED HER HUSBANDS POCKET WALLET, WHICH CONTAINED THEIR PHOTOGRAPHS.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 12/11/1917.
