BORN WELTON 1896. HULL PAL. SON OF JAMES HEBDEN AND MARY JANE NORMAN, OF 48 MASON STREET. WORKED AS A LABOURER. MARRIED 17/09/1915. HIS WIFE BERTHA GARETT (WARD) AND SON HAROLD LIVED AT 1 LILY GROVE, SUBWAY STREET, HULL AND ALSO AT , 17 JOSEPHS TERRACE, BARNSLEY STREET AND 2 MOUNT TERRACE, HODGSON STREET, HULL. HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 01/10/1914. SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. KILLED IN ACTION 13/11/1916, AGED 20.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE HAROLD HEBDEN 12/791. Born in Welton, East Yorkshire in 1896 Harold was one of eight children to James and Mary Hebden of 48 Mason Street, Hull. He enlisted at City Hall on 1st October 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. He married Bertha Garrett at St Philips on 17th September 1915 and she gave birth to their only child, Harold Jnr, on 25th October just a few short weeks before her new husband shipped to Egypt. Their time together was short-lived. Harold Hebden was killed in action on 13th November 1916 at Beaumont Hamel on the Somme as the Pals attacked German positions around the ruins of the French village of Serre. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France; he was 20 years old.
