Hewitt, Edwin Ross

Sgt, Edwin Ross Hewitt, 11th East Lancs, in the uniform of a Frontiersman.

BORN HULL 1879. SON OF JAMES AND MARGARET HEWITT, OF 13 BURLEIGH STREET, HULL. HUSBAND OF JESSIE ANN HEWITT, LIVED 2 WALTER TERRACE, WEST PARADE, SPRING BANK, HULL. THEY HAD TWO SONS, LESLIE AND HENRY. HE HAD ENLISTED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT IN 1900. HE SERVED IN THE BOER WAR AND WAS AWARDED THE QUEEN’S SOUTH AFRICAN MEDAL AND THE TERRITORIAL EFFICIENCY MEDAL IN CIVILIAN LIFE HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A GENERAL WORK’S PLUMBER. HE ENLISTED HULL, JOING THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE SOON TRANSFERRED AS 10479 5TH ARMY CYCLIST CORPS. POSTED TO FRANCE. HE SERVED AS A SERGEANT, WITH THE 11TH EAST LANCASHIRE REGIMENT. HE DIED ON ON 11/07/1916, AGED 36. HIS WIFE RECEIVED HIS ARMY EFFECTS AND WAR PENSION.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE OLD TOWN ROLL OF HONOUR – HDM 01/12/1916.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 18/07/1916. *
