Hill, Arthur

BORN WINTERTON, LINCOLN 1892. SON OF FREDERICK HILL & ANNE TOMASON HILL, OF 7 LINCOLN STREET, HULL. HIS WIFE, LILLIAN HILL, LIVED AT 38 ESTCOURT STREET, HULL, (CWGC ADDRESS), AND 102 NEWBRIDGE ROAD, HULL (HDM ADDRESS, 01/09/1917). BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS EMPLOYED ON THE HULL TRAM SERVICE.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS A GUNNER, IN THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY, HE WAS TAKING TEA, TO HIS MATES IN THE GUN PIT, ON 31/07/1917, WHEN A SHELL  KILLED THEM ALL. HE WAS 27 AND BURIED AT DICKEBUSCH NEW MILITARY CEMETERY EXTENSION, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “LOVED AND REMEMBERED STILL”

ARTHUR’S DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 01/09/1917 WITH HIS PHOTO. *A LETTER FROM THE ARMY CHAPLAIN SENT TO HIS WIFE SAYS HE LEFT A RELATIVELY SAVE SPOT TO DELIVER TEA TO HIS FRIENDS, WHEN A DIRECT HIT KILLED ALL THE GUN CREW INSTANTLY.
