Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE ARTHUR HILL 27888. Born 1894, the youngest of four sons to George and Jane Hill, of 52 Lister Street, Hull. Arthur was a Ship’s Assistant Steward before the war having followed his father into the trade. According to Census Records he had married Mary Hill, a woman twelve years his senior and at the age of 17 already had two young children and a stepson. The couple resided with his parents. Arthur Hill was killed in action on 15th August 1918 when the infiltration attack he was a part of was caught on open ground by German machine gun positions around Vieux-Berquin. They lost their officers but managed to consolidate their positions under the command of a Private Pottage who assumed control of the situation and made good their position despite hostile fire. It is at such times heroes are born, and without Pottage’s presence many more men could have died when you consider the youth and inexperience in the ranks. Alas, not even this man amongst men could save Arthur Hill. He was buried at Le Grand Hasard Military Cemetery, Morbecque; at 24 a son, a husband and a father.
