Hill, William

Born Hull October 1892. Son of John Hill (1867-1921) and Maria Coupland (1870-1947), of 9, Berkshire Street, Holderness Road, Hull (1911 census). Son of a Ranks Flour Miller. He worked as a Saw Mill Labourer. He had an elder sister Annie, and was the eldest of five sons.

Enlisted 24 June 1916. Called up on 5 Feb 1917. Posted to France on 23 May 1917. Served with the 2nd York and Lancaster Regiment. Wounded by Mustard gas on 19 Sug 1917. Returned to service. Wounded again on 29 April 1918. Lost sight in both eyes and had left left amputated. Discharged on 25 Nov 1919. Recovered at St Dunstans Blind Hospital. Had artificial leg fitted. Awarded the Silver War Badge (No: 03781)

Died at Hull in December 1933, aged 41.

He married Edith Shepherdson (1892-1949), at Hull Registry Office,  on 14 Dec 1912. They had two sons, George and William. They lived at 6, Ethel Grove, Liverpool Street, Hull (Army Records address)

His army effects and war pension were left to his widow, Edith. Awarded weekly war pension of 23/6 on 26 Nov 1919.
