Hirst, Joseph Edward

Born Burnley, Lancs 1896. Son of Frank and Bertha Hirst, of 235, Brunshaw Road., Burnley and Hull. he was working in the coal mines at the age of 15. Enlisted Nelson, Lancs. Killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, aged 19. His body was not recovered and is commemorated at Thiepval memorial to the missing. His army effects were returned to his parents.
