BORN HULL 1894. SON OF JOSEPH HOCKLESS (1870-1940) & SARAH JANE DARNELL (1871-1947), AT THIS CWGC ADDRESS. SON OF A OIL MILL PRESSMAN. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN, THREE OF WHICH DIED IN INFANCY. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 3/5892, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 14/08/1916, AGED 22. BURIED AT FAUBOURG D’AMIENS CEMETERY, ARRAS. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE DIED FOR HONOUR”.
UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS MOTHER, SARAH JANE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HDM, ON 31/08/1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED AS KILLED ON THE SYKES STREET, ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 09 October 1916).
