BORN HULL 1898. SON OF JOSEPH HOCKLESS (1870-1940) & SARAH JANE DARNELL (1871-1947), AT 4 CLARK’S SQUARE, SYKES STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A OIL MILL PRESSMAN. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN, THREE OF WHICH DIED IN INFANCY. THE FAMILY LIVED AT 12 ALBORO STREET IN 1901. JAMES HOCKLESS ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY IN HULL. HE AND HIS HORSE WERE HIT BY A SHELL AND DIED TOGETHER, ON 10/07/1917. HE WAS AGED 19. BURIED AT COXYDE MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 15TH AUGUST 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS MOTHER, SARAH JANE.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE HARRY HOCKLESS, 1ST EYR, WAS KILLED ON 10/08/1916, AT ARRAS, AGED 22. BOTH SONS HAVE INSCRIBED ON THEIR GRAVES, “HE DIED FOR HONOUR”.
