Hodgson, William James

Sproatley War memorial, East Yorkshire.

Born Marton, Yorkshire, 1897. Son of William Hodgson (1862-1913) and Isabella Sweeting (1862-1904). Son of a gardener. One of eight children. He enlisted at Stockton-on- Tees, Yorks. Served as Private, 35406, William James Hodgson, 1st/7th Northumberland Fusilier. Killed on 24/10/1917, aged 20. He is commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial. His army effects were left to sisters, Dorothy, Bessie and Mary J, and brother Henry Thomas Hodgson. Another brother. His brother, Sapper, John Edward Hodgson, RE’s, was killed the month before, on 18/09/1917, aged 25. His name is listed on the Sproatley Village memorial. One of 61 men form the Sproatley who served in the Great War, 13 of which died.
