Hoggard, Wilfred John

BORN HULL 1893. SON OF CHARLES & AUGUSTA HOGGARD WHO LIVED AT 37 BLAYDES STREET. BEFORE THE WAR, WILFRED WORKED AS A GROCER’S ASSISTANT FOR THE HULL CO-OP.HE ENLISTED IN JANUARY 1915. HIS BROTHER CYRIL JOINED THE EYR. WILFRED WAS ONE OF THREE MEN KILLED WHEN A SHELL HIT THEIR DUGOUT. “HE WAS KEEN AND TRUSTWORTHY SOLDIER.” HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 10TH JANUARY 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HE IS BURIED AT QUATRE-VENTS MILITARY CEMETERY, ESTREE-CAUCHY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “LOVE’S SACRIFICE FOR LIBERTY”
