Holdsworth, Harry Hinchcliffe

Private, Harry Hinchcliffe HOLDSWORTH, 7th East Yorkshire Regiment. Killed on 12/05/1917, aged 40.

BORN BRADFORD 07/11/1876. SON OF JOHN H. & MARY ANN HOLDSWORTH, AT 14, HOWARD STREET, HORTON, BRADFORD. HE MOVED TO HULL IN THE EARLY 1890’S.

HE MARRIED IN HULL, IN 1899. HIS WIFE HENRIETTA SOPHIA (COLLIER), LIVED AT 28, HADDON STREET, HAWTHORNE AVENUE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE WORKED AT THE HULL ICE COMPANY AND ALSO AS A FURNACE STOKER.

HE ENLISTED IN OCTOBER 1914. SERVED WITH THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. LEFT FOR FRANCE, ON 08/10/1915. WOUNDED WITH ‘TRENCH FOOT’, ON THE 11/03/1916. RETURNED TO ENGLAND ON 21/03/1916, AND TREATED AT GOSFORTH HOSPITAL. RETURNED TO THE 3RD RESERVE EYR, ON 09/03/1917. EMBARKED WITH THE B.E.F., TO FRANCE ON 16/03/1917. RETURNED TO THE 7TH EYR, IN THE FIELD, ON 07/04/1917. HE WAS KILLED DURING THE THIRD BATTLE OF THE SCARPE, ON 12/05/1917, AGED 40. FIGHTING A BATTLE FOR THE CHEMICAL WORKS, AT ROUEX.
HE LEFT A WIDOW AND NINE CHILDREN TO MOURN HIS LOSS. HIS LAST CHILD, HETTY WAS BORN ON THE 22/07/1917, JUST FIVE WEEKS AFTER HE HAD BEEN KILLED. TWO OF HIS SONS SERVED IN THE NAVY.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 15TH FEBRUARY 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
INTERRED AT THE AGNY CEMETERY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE.
