BORN HULL 1898. SON OF ROBERT HOLDSWORTH (1868-1955) & ANNIE TEALE (1876-1971), OF 11, ST LEONARDS AVENUE, HESSLE ROAD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS) AND 12, NABURN STREET, WOODCOCK STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD ONE SISTER, VIOLET. HIS BROTHER GEORGE, DIED AGED 5.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. FORMERLY, SAPPER, 474351, EAST RIDING ROYAL ENGINEERS. TRANSFERRED AS GUNNER, 321ST ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 03/09/1918, AGED 20. KILLED BY BOMB FRAGMENTS DROPPED BY HOSTILE PLANE AT 11.30PM. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER , DESCRIBED HIM AS A “CHEEFUL COMRADE, VERRY WILLING AND EFFICIENT”.
BURIED AT WINDMILL BRITISH CEMETERY, MONCHY-LE-PREUX, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS – “SOME DAY AGAIN OUR EYES SHALL SEE OUR ONLY SON HELD IN MEMORY”
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, ROBERT.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE HULL GARDENER SOCIETY MEMORIAL, AT HULL MINSTER.
