BORN PICKERING, YORKSHIRE, 17/05/1890.  SON OF MITCHELL (1863-1925) & CHARLOTTE HOLTBY (1865-1953), OF NORTH COATES FARM, SOUTH CAVE, SWANLAND AND BRANTINGHAM. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS. A SINGLE MAN AND SKILLED LABOURER. WORKED AS A FARMER AND WAGGONER IN BRANTINGHAM. EMIGRATED TO TORONTO, CANADA, ON 20/04/1911. MOVED TO QUEBEC ON 02/05/1912, AND SETTLED AS A RAILWAY RULLEYMAN. ALSO WORKED FOR THE DOMINION TRANSPORT COMPANY AND LIVED AT 37, CLINTON STREET

HE ENLISTED  AT QUEBEC, ON 20/09/1914. LEFT FOR ENGLAND ON THE S/S “MEGANTIC”, ON 14/09/1914, WITH THE FIRST CANADIAN CONTINGENT. SERVED IN THE 15TH BATTALION, 48TH HIGHLAND ONTARIO REGIMENT, CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. KILLED IN ACTION, AT HILL 60, ON 27/04/1915, AGED 24. COMMEMORATED ON THE YPRES MENIN GATE MEMORIAL BELGIUM.

HIS DEATH IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNEY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 1 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.

HIS NAME IS ONE OF 12 MEN RECORDED ON THE BRANTINGHAM WW1 MEMORIAL.
