BORN BARTON 1882. PRIOR TO WAR WORKED FOR PICKERING AND HALDANE FISHING COMPANY. HIS SHIP WAS MINED BY UBOAT 7. 11 DIED. WIDOW JENNIE & THREE CHILDREN ABOVE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 3RD MAY 1916 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

Lena Melling, built by Cochrane & Sons, Ltd., Selby in 1915 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 274 tons. On April 23rd, 1916, Lena Melling was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-7 (Georg Haag), 1 1/2 miles southwest from the Elbow lightvessel. 11 persons were lost.
